Series 100 Classes – MIG Welding

WLD101 MIG Welding Basics

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with solid wire and shielding gas to create a quality weld bead on mild steel. MIG (metal inert gas) welding — also called GMAW (gas metal arc welding) and wire feed welding — is a semi-automatic method of welding, using a solid wire and shielding gas. With some equipment changes, MIG welding can be used for a small variety of different metals, such as stainless steel and aluminum. Many MIG welding machines can also run a tubular, flux cored wire that does not require a shielding gas (called flux cored arc welding, or FCAW).

WLD102 MIG Welding Advanced - Thin Wall Tubing

After completing MIG Welding Basics, you can practice specific joints and improve weld bead quality under guidance of an instructor.
Many different joints and out of position welding will be discussed and individual students will perform at their own rates. Emphasis will be placed on visual inspection of welds and heat zone theory, so that you gain a better understanding of what a quality weld joint really looks like.

WLD103 MIG Welding Advanced - Aluminum Techniques - Spool Gun

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a basic MIG welding equipment setup with a spool gun to create a quality weld bead on aluminum. WLD104 MIG Welding Sculpture

Sample metal sculptures will be provided and then they will be shown where they can find scrap metal around the shop. Students will use a variety of materials collected in the shop and figure out what they are going to make as they cut out and prep material for welding. A lot of time will spent doing weld prep, fixturing, welding, and post weld clean up (deburring, grinding, shaping). Students will MIG and spot weld together pieces as needed to make a cool metal sculpture.

WLD105 MIG Welding Fabrication Techniques - Cube Knot

Students will learn to cope structural steel to make rigid square joints. Fixtures will be used to secure joints for welding while student first Tack their joints, verify accurate and then final weld. Students will make a MC Escher like design called a Cube Knot. This is a 2 session class that includes cutting material, welding, grinding, and finishing techniques.

Series 200 Classes – TIG Welding

WLD201 TIG Welding Basics

In this Safety and Basic Use class, you will learn how to use a basic TIG welding equipment setup to create a quality weld bead on mild steel under 1/8″” thick. Alternately called gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and heliarc, TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding can be used for a wide variety of different metals and can produce a very pure, precise and attractive weld with extensive practice.
For your safety, you must wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt in natural fibers, and remember to always wear closed-toed shoes at Urban Workshop. Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at Urban Workshop as a member!

WLD202 TIG Welding Advanced - Aluminum Techniques

After completing the TIG Basics class, you can try your skills in a different material. Aluminum has characteristics that require specific equipment setup, metal preparation and torch operation. In this class, you will practice specific joints and improve weld bead quality under the guidance of an instructor. Lap, butt, corner and fillet welds will all be discussed and individual students will perform at their own rates. Emphasis will be placed on visual inspection of welds and heat zone theory, so that you gain a better understanding of what a quality weld joint really looks like.
