This class will cover common tools, materials, and techniques used in blacksmithing, as well as provide an overview of the best safety and ergonomic practices. Students will then learn how to taper, draw out, round, scroll, twist, and finish a workpiece using light stock. To gain experience, students will make a coat hook with a decorative design.

TRK101 Blacksmithing Course

Discover the lost art of blacksmithing and experience the thrill of shaping glowing hot steel with your own hands.

This hands-on blacksmithing course introduces you to a craft that blends skill, strength, and creativity. Equal parts trade and art form, blacksmithing is challenging, rewarding, and surprisingly accessible with the right instruction—whether you’re exploring a new hobby or laying the foundation for a future business.

You’ll learn how to safely and effectively use blacksmithing tools including hammers, anvils, tongs, and punches, while molding hot metal into functional and decorative pieces.

Students who complete the course are signed off to independently use the metal shop and blacksmithing area as members. The course meets once a week for six weeks.
