What is the difference between AWS vs LA City Certification?

 In Southern California, there are two main bodies that issue welder certification: The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) aka “L.A. City” and the American Welding Society (AWS). Depending on the goals of the welder, they may choose one certification over another.

  • AWS Certification: Get certified with our in-depth Welder Training Programs, aligned with AWS standards. As an Accredited Test Facility (ATF), we offer training, practice, and AWS certification testing—all in one convenient location. Beginners and experienced welders welcome.

  • LA City Certification: Urban Workshop provides Performance Testing for the LA City Certified Welder License. We can test manual and semi-automatic. Our most popular tests are the D1.1 Structural Steel, D1.3 Structural Sheet Metal, and D1.4 Reinforcing Steel (rebar).
