Series 100 Classes – Wood Shop Basics

TRK104 Woodshop Course

Always wanted to try woodworking but didn’t know where to start? This is that starting point. In a world of screens and subscriptions, woodworking lets you walk away with something solid, useful, and made by your own hands.

It’s no surprise this is our most popular course. Woodworking is endlessly satisfying, and this course gives you a strong, confidence-building foundation whether your goal is building furniture, restoring an antique, or finally fixing that trim at home.

Starting with the fundamentals, you will learn to safely and effectively use a wide range of stationary machines and hand tools, gaining hands-on experience that translates directly to real-world projects. 

Throughout the course you’ll gain hands-on experience preparing lumber, following project plans, and completing a finished piece while refining your technique and machine setup skills along the way.

Students who complete this course are signed off to independently use the woodshop as members. This course meets once a week for five weeks.

WOD101 Wood Shop Basics

In this basic use class, you will learn how to safely operate the core machines in the Wood Shop, including the sliding compound miter saw, table saw, wood drill press, wood band saw and the belt and disk sanders. You will perform various operations on all of these machines to gain comfort and proficiency with the operation and usage of these tools.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders. If you have long hair, please tie it up!

Ages: 18 and up. Ages 14–17 allowed with parental permission. Under 14 requires a parent to be present in class.

WOD102 Wood Shop Hand Tool Basics

This is a great skill building class for adults who may have missed high school shop class or are looking to familiarize themselves with these tools before undertaking a DIY project. In this class, you will learn how to safely operate a number of the most frequently used hand and finishing tools including rasps, chisels, files, miter saws, coping saws, hammers, punches, drills, and sandpaper. Your instructor will guide you through the proper techniques to cut, shape, assemble and finish a small project.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders

Ages: 18 and up. Ages 14–17 allowed with parental permission. Under 14 requires a parent to be present in class.

Series 200 Classes – Wood Lathe

TRK104B - Wood Bowl Turning Course

The skills learned in this 9-hour course provide a solid foundation to build on, whether you want
to build bowls, vases, etc. The goal of this course is to provide the knowledge needed for
someone to bring their creative vision to reality, all while instilling the best safety practices and
skillset needed to start your wood turning journey.

Starting with the basics, students learn to apply proper safety practices on each piece of
machinery, woodworking theory, the nature of wood and stock selection of raw lumber,
minimization of waste through thoughtful milling practices, squaring up their lumber, and how to
work from a plan as you make your first project. Students also learn proper finishing techniques,
and how to tune machinery for the best cutting applications.

Students who complete this track are signed off to use the wood lathe whenever they like as members. This course meets once a week for 3 weeks.

WOD201 Wood Lathe Basics

In this basics class, you will learn to safely use the lathe to make wooden parts. You will learn to set up the lathe, prepare the raw materials and use the different wood turning tools including chisels, gouges and scrapers, lathe face-plates and chuck. The class will cover spindle turning for items like furniture legs.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders. If you have long hair, please tie it up!

WOD202 Green Bowl Turning

Description: In this workshop, you will learn basic bowl making on the wood lathe, going from a square piece of stock to a finished bowl. You will learn how to prepare the green material and use several wood turning tools including carbide insert tools, scrapers, jacob’s chuck, face plate, 4-jaw chuck, and flat jaws. We will cover initial mounting, roughing to round and hogging off, techniques for remounting the bowl, shaping the exterior, and finishing techniques.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders. If you have long hair, please tie it up!
