Series 100 Classes – Wood Shop Basics

TRK104 Woodshop Course

Everyone loves the smell of fresh cut wood, especially when you’re the one cutting it. This is our most popular courses because, well, everyone loves wood working. This skills learned in this 18 hour course provides a solid foundation to build on whether you want to build furniture, refinish an antique, or fix the trim on the house.

Starting with the basics, students learn to apply proper safety practices on each piece of machinery, woodworking theory, the nature of wood and stock selection of raw lumber, minimization of waste through thoughtful milling practices, squaring up their lumber, and how to work from a plan as you make your first project. This course prepares students for basic joinery projects by teaching them the do and don’ts of joinery techniques. Students also learn proper finishing techniques, and how to tune machinery for the best cutting applications.

Students who complete this track are signed off to use the woodshop whenever they like as members. This course meets once a week for 6 weeks.

WOD101 Wood Shop Basics

In this basic use class, you will learn how to safely operate the core machines in the Wood Shop, including the sliding compound miter saw, table saw, wood drill press, wood band saw and the belt and disk sanders. You will perform various operations on all of these machines to gain comfort and proficiency with the operation and usage of these tools.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders. If you have long hair, please tie it up!

WOD102 Wood Shop Hand Tool Basics

This is a great skill building class for adults who may have missed high school shop class or are looking to familiarize themselves with these tools before undertaking a DIY project. In this class, you will learn how to safely operate a number of the most frequently used hand and finishing tools including rasps, chisels, files, miter saws, coping saws, hammers, punches, drills, and sandpaper. Your instructor will guide you through the proper techniques to cut, shape, assemble and finish a small project.

Series 200 Classes – Wood Lathe

WOD201 Wood Lathe Basics

In this basics class, you will learn to safely use the lathe to make wooden parts. You will learn to set up the lathe, prepare the raw materials and use the different wood turning tools including chisels, gouges and scrapers, lathe face-plates and chuck. The class will cover spindle turning for items like furniture legs.

WOD202 Green Bowl Turning

Description: In this workshop, you will learn basic bowl making on the wood lathe, going from a square piece of stock to a finished bowl. You will learn how to prepare the green material and use several wood turning tools including carbide insert tools, scrapers, jacob’s chuck, face plate, 4-jaw chuck, and flat jaws. We will cover initial mounting, roughing to round and hogging off, techniques for remounting the bowl, shaping the exterior, and finishing techniques.

WOD203 Segmented Bowl Turning

This project class will take your bowl making techniques to the next level as you learn how to make a segmented bowl from start to finish. In this workshop you will learn how to design the bowl, how to create your own designs, create custom jigs to make your pieces, assemble your stock, mount, turn, and finish the bowl.

WOD301 Squaring Lumber

Add a whole new set of precision tools to your woodworking arsenal when you learn how to use the jointer, planer, and table router. These tools can be used to turn rough lumber into finished boards ready for your projects, create complex profiles for edge finishing and joinery operations, and more.

Series 400 Classes – Cabinet Making

WOD401 Cabinet Making 1

This course introduces the student to the methods, materials, tools, and machinery used in the construction of traditional faceframe cabinetry. Topics include the design, construction, fabrication, and safe use of woodworking machinery and materials involved in cabinet construction.

WOD401 Cabinet Making 2

In this course, the student will review and learn methods, materials, tools, and machinery used in the design, manufacturing, and installation of face frame cabinetry. Topics include upper and lower cabinet construction, multiple cabinet systems, and installation of face frame cabinetry. Emphasis is placed on production techniques and the safe use of woodworking machinery and materials involved in cabinetmaking and millwork.

WOD403 Advanced Woodworking - Joinery

In this class, you will learn joint-making techniques as well as highly valuable theory and background information as they apply to joint making. You will learn when to use certain joints, which joints are the strongest, how grain direction influences joint strength, glue selection, pre-gluing techniques, proper clamping and much more. This class will provide the foundation needed to create virtually any wood structural project.

WOD404 Wood Finishing Techniques

This 4-part series of classes will give every student a thorough understanding of the finishing process. It covers all aspects of wood finishing: Proper sanding techniques, coloring wood (dyes, stains, chemical and plant dyes), color-matching, membrane finishes (shellac, varnish, lacquer) and understanding solvents and their use in the finishing process. We will also explore hand-rubbed finishes, shading and toning, making your own custom stains and finishes and stripping/refinishing furniture and cabinetry. 

Class meets once a week for 4 weeks.

Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers the shoulders.

Series 500 Classes – Carpentry

WOD501 Basic Carpentry

In this class you learn the basics of everyday tools on the job, or what you may already have in your home. You will also learn what basic tools you need in your tool box to handle most basic carpentry projects. You will be immediately be hands on with all of the tools, learning their importance, how to use them safely, and how each tool is essential in a basic carpentry job.

Tools include: drill, impact driver, orbital sander, air compressor, speed square, nail guns, pneumatic stapler, and miter saw.

Students will choose between three projects to make and take home. This class can be repeated so students can make the different projects and gain experience. Attire: Pants, closed toe shoes, shirt that covers shoulders. No long sleeves or jewelry.
