ADMISSIONS OVERVIEW
Individuals who meet the following criteria are eligible to enrolling training courses or certification testing.
- Be at least 16 years old. If under 18, parent or guardian must provide written consent.
- Age 14 and up if student has completed level 1 thru 4 of the Urban Workshop youth program
- Able to understand some basic English language instructions
Interested students are encouraged to attend a FREE Welder Evaluation Session with one of our instructors to determine what certification is right for them and then based on their demonstrated skills what training may be required. This way students only enroll in training they need to pass the certification test they wish to obtain. For this reason, it is not necessary to consider any previous credits from other schools to enter the programs.
Students who achieve success in the program also:
- Have good close-up vision at a distance of up to 18 inches with or without corrective lenses
- Have a good hand dexterity and steady hands
- Have good hand-eye coordination
It is recommended to do an in-person welder evaluation at Urban Workshop prior to enrolling in the program. Urban Workshop reserves the right to accept or not accept individuals based on their welder evaluations.
Test applicants can enroll directly to certification tests either online or in person without attending a welder evaluation session. However, we have seen that nearly 70% of welders who walk-in to take the test without any practice-sessions fail the practical welding certification test. The pass rate goes to nearly 100% for students who take at least one practice test or a 4-session Foundational Skills training prior to testing. If unsure, test applicants can attend a welder evaluation for guidance.
Because we are a test center, and not a school, we have several unique benefits for applicants not able to attend other training facilities.
What is not required:
- A high school diploma or GED
- Citizenship, green cards, or visas
- School transcripts from previous schools
