The path to becoming a certified welder begins with the intro class where you learn the details of how to set up and operate MIG welding equipment to use it safely and effectively. Then you will jump right in and start the training designed to help you learn quickly, gain experience, and pass the American Welding Society D9.1 welder performance test. You will learn how to read blueprints and understand welding symbols so that you can work from a print to fabricate more complex weldments when you get a job.
All of our instructors are AWS-certified welders who have worked in the industry for years and will give you the best advice on how to interview for a welding job and pass an employer interview welding test. Our goal is to teach you how to weld, get certified, and give you the tools you need to get a welding job and be successful.
There is simply no other program like this where you can learn under a certified welder, have access to a fully professional fabrication shop, and use the calibrated MIG welders to practice as much as you want.
The course is offered for 3 hours each day or evening during the week. Students select their preferred class session and then attend at that time Monday through Friday for 4 weeks. The program includes one month of membership at Urban Workshop and students are encouraged to use the fabrication and welding facilities as much as they need during the program to practice for the performance test. The D9.1 Sheet Metal Welding Certification test uses the MIG welder on 10 and 18 gauge test coupons in 8 welding positions to achieve the full certification. you will test in the following orientations for both groove and fillet welds: 2 F & G, 3 F & G downhill and uphill, 4 F & G.
As an AWS Accredited Test Facility (ATF), the entire training course and welder certification test is performed onsite by our team, making it easier than ever to get your AWS welding certification and become a professional welder.
Prerequisites: None!
Equipment: Students get a complete welder’s gear set including their own welding helmet, fireproof welders’ jacket, safety gear and hand tools.
Minimum age: 16 years
Attire: Long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, Long sleeve flame retardant shirt. Polyester clothing is highly flammable so no breathable sports shirts/pants.

I was a clueless beginner when I came to learn welding, but I came out knowing how to do basic MIG welding. It was also very fun. The instructor, Dani, was extremely friendly and explained everything clearly. I saw that there are lots of other classes, including woodwork and forging. It’s a cool place!
