BUS101 Small Business 1 on 1

The goal of this 60 minute, open forum discussion is to help you succeed in building your small business – whether you need general business suggestions and advice, design / engineering / product development help, or even marketing help – anything is on the table. Our desire is to help your business grow any way we can. So please come to this office session with all your ideas and issues and we will get thru as many as we can.

This Office Hours Session is for members of Urban Workshop only, and is designed to provide help with our Member Small Businesses.  If you are not a Member of Urban Workshop, please select the “Non-Member Small Business Assistance” option.

BUS102 Make Money in a Makerspace

Are you contemplating a side hustle for a few extra bucks or new startup to change the world? We will discuss a variety of ways to use your time at Urban Workshop to do just that. The equipment, facilities, and members of Urban Workshop provide a massive advantage to new businesses that you may not even be aware of. Let us help as we discuss other successful members and their projects, how they did, and best practices.

BUS103 Business Planning

Who is your customer? How will you reach them? How many employees will you need and how will you pay them? We will talk about the many things that need to be considered as you plan to start your new business. Is the there market for your goods or service? All of these items will be discussed with full class participation. The goal of this class is to leave with a business plan outline that you can then compete on your own.

BUS104 Business Creation

Starting a new business is not difficult, but there are many things to consider before you start jumping through hoops with the city and state. This class discusses the types of business structures and reasons to use each including costs, overhead and filing requirements, liability, and more. Tips that you can do ahead of time to make life easier and improve the odds of success will be provided.

BUS105 Preparing Quotes and Costing

Part of making sure your business is successful is billing appropriately, charging a fair rate, and having Terms and Conditions that protect you. This class will show you how to calculate your billing rate, overhead application rate, and how to quote projects. Then you will need to prepare an estimate that will protect you. A quote template that we will walk thru and explain, will be provided for hourly programs as well as fixed bid projects. Please bring a laptop so you can edit files.

BUS106 Business Financial Forecasting

To run any business you must understand your revenues and expenses. This class will use a business forecasting spreadsheet developed for small businesses. As a class we will walk thru sources of revenue, expenses, COGS, profit and loss, and cash flows. Using the Excel template provided each student will start to build a budget for their business in the class with support from the instructor and other class members. At the completion you will have a budget spreadsheet suitable for doing 2 year projections and managing your business. Please bring a laptop to edit files.
