The vertical milling machine is one of the most versatile tools in the metal shop. Upon completion of this class, you will have the confidence and knowledge needed to use this machine to precisely shape steel, aluminum, brass or plastics. Proper operation and setup of this machine is covered. We will also discuss the various types of cutting tools, cutting operations, and work holding.

MAC102 Manual Mill - Tramming the Mill and Precision Work
In the Manual Mill Basics class, you were introduced to the function and fundamental operation of the mill.
In this class, we will focus tramming the mill’s head and vise, as well as how to square up a piece of work. You will also learn how to use a dial test indicator, 1-2-3 block, fly cutter and a deburring stone. This class is an ideal next step in your progression as a competent mill user.

Series 200 Classes – Machinists Metal Lathe
MAC201 Machinists Lathe Basics
In this class, you will learn the skills needed to safely operate a full-sized metal turning lathe. Each student in this Basic Safety Class will make and take a brass hammer head by shaping the profile of round metal stock to make a body and a handle, and bore a hole to accommodate a rubber hammer tip.

MAC202 Metal Lathe Advanced - 4 Jaw Chuck, Feeds and More
In this class, you will learn how to safely perform several advanced operations on the metal lathe. You will learn to change out the chuck; center circular and square stock in the 4-jaw chuck; use a live center; turn between centers and mount stock between centers. You will also learn to use feed rates, a roughing pass and a finish pass to improve the overall look, feel and quality of your finished pieces. The instructor will cover a wide variety of in-class projects that are designed to help you establish these skills. This is a great class for those looking to improve their overall level of comfort in the machine shop and metal lathe working skills.

MAC203 Metal Lathe Advanced - Tooling and Tool Grinding
Lathe tooling has such a wide variety of shapes, materials, standards and sizes that sometimes choosing the proper tool can be overwhelming. Even more important is having an understanding of what makes a lathe tool work and why one may be more appropriate for the job at hand than another. In this class, you will learn the basics of lathe tooling selection and grind your own high speed steel lathe bit. We will also cover the basics of carbide tooling and explain when and why to choose carbon over steel. This class will help round out your metal lathe knowledge and equip you with a skill that can save you a good deal of headache and money down the road.

MAC204 Metal Lathe Advanced - Knurling and Threading
Using a metal lathe to create custom threads for bolts, nuts or any custom application can seem like a daunting and quite complex machining operation. This class breaks down the process and clearly explains the concepts and techniques of threading. You will learn about the different types of tools used for threading, anatomy and nomenclature of threads and the step-by-step process to machining any kind of thread. We will also cover the process of knurling parts to create texture for gripping.
