Youth Courses

 

These youth courses are for the students who just can’t get enough. To be eligible to enroll students must have fulfilled necessary prequisite levels of the Hands-on Youth STEM program at Urban Workshop (see individual course for requirements).

Youth Courses range from 12-18 hours for students that wish to go deeper in blacksmithing, wood working, welding, 3D printing, and laser etching. They are designed to help students get started on their path to mastery. These courses guide students along a path to help you learn about a particular subject and give you the confidence needed to take on any project. They are formatted so that the first few classes teach you about the tools, setup, fixturing, and application. Each course ends with at least one project giving you a chance to apply all you have learned.

The courses meet once a week, for 4, 6 or 8 weeks, and each class is 3 hours long. Some of the courses also serve as sign-off classes so be sure to ask the instructor so you know which areas and tools you can come back and use as a member. What will you make?

TRK101 - Blacksmithing Course

Blacksmithing is a blast and is incredibly popular. The rise of TV shows like Forged in Fire have shown everyone just how cool it can be beating a flaming hot piece in to something new. And don’t be fooled, it is an art! One that takes practice, but with instruction it can quickly become a fun pastime or activity that becomes a business. Whatever your goals, you are in for a good time.

Students in this 18 hour course will learn how to mold and shape hot metal into a variety of items, build skills to make your own set of tooling, and gain access to other tools in our metal shop that will help enhance your projects in the forge. The class track will start with blacksmithing basics, such as proper use of hammers, anvils, tongs, and punches, and culminate in a project of your own design.

Students who complete this course will be signed off to use the metal shop and Blacksmithing area whenever they like as a member. This course meets once a week for 6 weeks.

Non-member Price: $1,460

TRK104Y - Woodshop Course

Everyone loves the smell of fresh cut wood, especially when you’re the one cutting it. This is our most popular courses because, well, everyone loves wood working. This skills learned in this 18 hour course provides a solid foundation to build on whether you want to build furniture, refinish an antique, or fix the trim on the house.

Starting with the basics, students learn to use all of the various stationary equipment and hand tools safely and effectively. This gives you the experience you need to be able to solve problems on your own projects later.

As you gain experience  you will be exposed to woodworking theory, the nature of wood and stock selection of raw lumber, minimization of waste through thoughtful milling practices, squaring up their lumber, and how to work from a plan as you make your first project. You will also learn proper finishing techniques, and how to tune machinery for the best cutting applications.

Students who complete this track are signed off to use the woodshop whenever they like as members. This course meets once a week for 5 weeks.

TRK106 - 3D Printing Course

Learn everything you need to know to start 3D printing by taking this accelerated 3D printing course. Over the course of this two day-long program you will build your own Ender-3 3D printer and work to become proficient in the world of 3D printing. You will assemble, calibrate, print, and design your own custom parts using Autodesk Fusion360 CAD modeling software. No prior experience in 3D printing or CAD modeling is required. All materials are included in the course fee, including your very own Ender 3 printer! The only question we’ll have for you when you’re done is, “what will you make”? The 3d printer is included for you to take home.

This course meets for a full day (9am to 4pm) on consecutive weekends for a total of 12-hours.

Non-member Price: $952
(Remember this includes the cost of a brand new Ender-3 printer)

TRK103 - Laser Etching Course

This 18-hour laser design course is formatted to teach fundamental concepts and skills in the use of our laser etching and cutting machines, electronics, soldering, and 2-D design in CorelDraw that will help you on your way to creating your own multifaceted projects on the lasers. Students in this course will meet once a week for a total of 6 individual 3-hour sessions. For those with an Urban Workshop Membership, this course signs students off on our Epilog Laser machines.

Starting with the basics, students will learn how to operate the epilog laser machines how to adjust their settings and troubleshoot ways to improve their outcomes, and then dive into how to create their own 2-D designs using CorelDraw. Advanced techniques including the rotary tools, color gradients for laser control, printing on various materials will be cover in detail. Projects will include importing images form the internet, using Adobe transfer to import hand drawn images or photographs, 2-pat painting process, jig making and much more. With this course complete you will be ready to start your own laser business making exciting and unique laser cut and etched products.

Students who complete this course are signed off to use the laser etchers whenever they like as members. This course meets once a week for 4 weeks for 3 hours.

TRK105 - MIG Welding Course

Explore the world of MIG Welding as you learn industry standard weld joints, how to adjust welder settings, and troubleshoot welds that are improper. You will leave this 16-hour course with a portfolio of the welding techniques you can apply to a wide range of projects. Students are also introduced to the machinery available to them in the metal shop and learn how to identify, select, and work with the right metal for their job. In the first project students will design and create their own welded metal sculpture under the guidance of an experienced instructor. The second project called, the cube knot, is a challenging manufacturing project that requires coping square joints, fixturing, tack welding, finish welding, and surface clean up to complete.

Students who complete this course will be signed off to use the metal shop and MIG welders whenever they like as members. This 18 hour course meets once a week for 6 weeks for 3 hours.

TRK107 - Stained Glass Course

In this 18 hour course students will learn the basics of creating and cutting patterns, scoring and breaking glass in straight lines and curves, grinding, foiling, and soldering for stained glass art pieces using the Tiffany copper foil technique. In the first half of the course, students will make their own stained glass sun catchers to take home. In the second half, students will combine all of their knowledge into a large project that they design from start to finish. All tools and materials will be provided.

This course meets once a week for a total of six 3-hour sessions.

PRO105 - Build an Electric Guitar

Make a solid body telecaster style electric guitar. In this 18-hour course you will learn how to further your woodshop skills by using a blueprint and a router template to mill rough lumber to spec. You will mount and solder the electronics, mount the neck, learn the basics of guitar setup, string it, plug it in, and start jamming! You will leave this class with everything you need to become a rockstar! This ccourse includes everything: the wood, components, jacks, strap, and more.

We are currently only building right handed guitars. If you would like to make a left handed guitar, reach out to our staff beforehand. Please note, this class is not a luthier guitar making class, it is for beginners and intermediates. As such, we will not be making the neck from scratch, but rather mounting a premade neck.

Class will meet once a week for 6 weeks for 3 hours.
